Hal, I can’t believe that a sizable minority of Republican pols are truly members of the “Trumpist” cult. Rather I think they are driven by their unwillingness to lose the “power”,prestige, connections and money they currently have access to by keeping their positions. Believing that Trump could, might, or will win the ‘24 election, their love of their powers therefore won’t allow them to speak out against him. His wrath, if they should, would clearly lead to Trump-selected primary candidates against them in their home districts. It’s all about personal power and greed!!

Personally, I believe what is written here is the death knoll of the traditional Republican Party. THIS is the RINO talk!

uh, that would be knell. Death knell.

Just an educated, lifelong conservative former GOP legislator talking here. The real RINO is Trump and those who've abandoned their GOP ideals in subservience to a carnival barker.

Your comments today reflect my own thinking. Our country needs a healthy, vital two party system. This ability has been sidetracked by Donald Trump and his Cult.True, idealistic Republicans would be sickened by what has been done to their party, TR, Ike Eisenhower, George Bush 1, I, as a moderate, hope to see our nation return to a healthy, vigorous two party debate structure unsullied by personal ego, venality, and greed.

Third party efforts have to do with principle and party politics and strategy. Two very informative podcasts by Historians Dr. Heather Cox Richardson and Dr. Joanne Freeman provide valuable information about No Labels and two third party bids that changed our nation: the 1844 election and 1912 election. The podcasts are “Now and Then” (May 17, 2023 titled “The Third Party Problem” and a follow up on July 19.

A few points of interest: No Labels was formed by a former Democratic fundraiser, Nancy Jacobson, whose husband has become a vocal defender of Trump over the past decade. Another interesting point is that Harlan Crow, a strong Republican contributor, has given $100,000 to No Labels. He has also bankrolled Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.

We need to be careful that while we may want a nominee other than Trump or Biden, we don’t end up splitting the Democratic vote and throwing the election to Trump or whoever the Republican nominee may be.

While I agree with much of this essay on the Republican Party I am more optimistic than you. If Trump 'wins' the 2024 nomination I expect him to be soundly beaten in the general election. I am a No Labels supporter (for several years) and will work to support their mixed 'unity' ticket if the primaries give us Biden and Trump as their choices. It's my hope that over the next 6-9 months enough Republicans will see the result of a Trump nomination and move to one of the rational candidates - some who have declared already and others perhaps who will announce in 2024.

Please follow the money for the No Labels Organization. I understand there is a strong conservative Trump backing to No Labels. Splitting the vote by voting for a No Labels candidate could very easily send Trump to the White House.

Yes ... I have followed No Labels for several years - and contribute 3-4 times a year - about a total of $100 annually. I have heard no support for Trump in any No Labels discussions. In my opinion, BOTH Trump and Biden are poor presidential candidates - yes, for different reasons - but it is past time for another generation of leadership. A bad business person and a lifelong politician are not going to do it.
